THE VALUE OF YOUR DONATION

Donation Impact Calculator Updated April 2013

If you are a taxpayer who itemizes deductions on federal tax returns (use of the long form), you may be entitled to claim charitable deductions for items that you donate to charity. Goodwill, under existing law, can't provide legal or tax advice, or assess the value of the items you are donating so we suggest that you contact your tax preparer for clarification and guidance.

Cash Donations San Diego's Goodwill does not solicit cash donations but they are gratefully accepted. We do not allow the employees in stores, the trucks, or donation centers to accept cash donations, or tips directly from the public. Should you wish to donate cash, please ask for a "Donation Envelope" which is a pre-stamped, business reply envelope to make it convenient for you to drop in any mailbox. We will send a written acknowledgement to you promptly.

Non-Cash Donations: Goodwill will provide you with a receipt that indicates the number of boxes or bags per category or lists larger, bulky items in general terms. We suggest that you make a detailed list of the items that you donate, along with any original purchase receipts or appraisals to keep in your files with your receipt from Goodwill.

Visit the IRS WEBSITE for more details. NOTE: "Part IV of Section B of FORM 8283 is signed by Goodwill only if the donor contributed, and deducts, property where the fair market value is more than $5,000. Under IRS regulations, such a donation requires an appraisal to be provided by the donor to Goodwill at the time the donation is made. Donors who contribute goods with a value of $5,000 or less need to fill out only Section A of the form, which does not require Goodwill's acknowledgement in the final Form 8283." The listing below provides you with general price ranges for certain categories of items sold in Goodwill retail stores.

We are unable to sell items that are broken, torn, or stained. Therefore the amounts shown are approximate and should only be used as a general guide for items in saleable condition. For all tax related questions, we recommend that you speak with your legal or tax advisor.

You may also purchase software on line and in computer stores that has this tax function built in, such as Turbo Tax "It's deductible".
